Only a few years ago, less than 25 years ago, and big enough to look, see, learn, love and hate, I loved the dusk times, the minutes just before darkness. I loved the sunsets. Those beautiful colours that I can only describe as lovely to hide the inability to distinguish the colours between Red,yellow-to-orange and between blue-Purple-Pink bla..bla..bla.I loved the drier seasons when the skies were all blue, the breeze was that cool, rainwater was clean, beautiful rivers existed and the air was so clean and fresh. The stars would start twinkling as early as minutes before 7.00 pm and by 8.00 pm, you can only imagine how beautiful it became. That was then, then when everything was beautiful, then when global warming and destruction of the ozone was just a hoax. Who dared to care anyway? Only a few scholars understood these things and they kept reminding us of the impending dangers like prophets of doom.
I came about when everything was that cool and especially in Kijabe, Subukia, from where I have witnessed greed, mismanagement and destruction of natural resources all in the name of hustling. Not long ago, Subukia was a bread basket, we had citrus in plenty, maize, beans and not to mention tomato production that could single-handedly flood all markets in the country in a single production season. We had water enough for everyone, clean and fresh. We had beautiful forests. But..but that was before greed hit our heads right at the very centre. We started doing more and more of tomatoes. To increase production, we thought adding more fertilizers to the soil increased the fertility and yes, more DAP and more CAN. Did we think of soil acidification? Soil testing? No! Who cared anyway?? With the best seed varieties like Tomato Colibri F1(for greenhouse production), Tomato Perseo F1(for outdoor field production) and Cabbage Tsavorite F1 of now, you were assured of the best harvest and best returns of your investment mainly due to the variety superiority both in yield production and disease resistance and tolerance.
Then the productive part of land started to shrink and we moved towards the fertile forest soils. We started charcoal burning, tree logging and all that goes together with that. The greed blinded us to see the other side of the coin, the side of the vice, the side of destruction. We cleared forests without consideration, and that went together with the few of the endemic endangered species, meaning that someone somewhere will never see that particular member of the biodiversity.
Now, nature has started hitting on us hard. Really hard, the once goldmine is now struggling to make any economic sense. The once beautiful rivers and springs are now gone to God know where. The citrus production was the first to exit aided by the dreaded citrus greening virus. Tomatoes, maize, beans, potatoes etc no longer meet the economic threshold probably because of the poor soils.
This is just the beginning of hard times. Let’s wait and see the effect of coal mining and use in the next let’s say 15 years. In the meantime, let me introduce one of the best foliar feed of our time.
