Internet and mostly Facebook is one of the most comical, ironical, satirical teachers of our time. It makes me question everything and making weird conclusions like justifying whoever said that everyone is made(probably me excluded in the list) was very right. Farmers are crazier with all manner of punch lines like “Farming is an art of losing money while working 400 hours a month to feed people who think you are trying to kill them”.
Before you walk into agriculture, what you as a new farmer should know is that farming is a business like any other. Like Forrest Gump’s famous quote says,”Life is like a box of chocolates, you will never know what you gonna get,”agriculture fits very well in this words. Like a coin, the industry has two faces and like a double-edged sword, it can inflict total pain or maximum joy at the end of the season.
Personally, I have encountered different reactions from different people. An old man once told me that the only two ventures where the return to investment can be as high as 1,000% is corruption, followed by agriculture and in both, if gods are not working in your favour, you could easily end up with a heart attack or other real issues. Mind you, it is not always poor timing that could lead you to a total loss, sometimes things will just happen mysteriously bringing unexpected market behaviour either to the surplus or scarcity. As a farmer, you should pray for the later.
With climate change taking a toll on the industry, farming is as well dynamic with better and better crop varieties coming up. To succeed as a modern farmer, you have to change the old-farmer-stubborn-mindset, be willing to learn and adopt new methods, new technologies, new varieties etc.
Talking of old farmer mindset I mean trusting an old variety because your old father once reaped big from it a decade or two ago forgetting there is a reason why research on plant breeding didn’t stop with the discovery of that “so-called super variety”.
Talking of a super variety, are you currently in greenhouse production?
Tomato? Cucumber? Capsicum?
Tomato CLX 3744 COLIBRI is one of the best greenhouse tomato varieties available in the market. Best for its indeterminate habit of growth meaning that its apical growth can keep on growing as long as its being given the right conditions for growth and proper crop management. The fruits from Colobri are extra long saladette, dark red in colour with an average weight between 130-140g and awesome shelflife attributed to its firmness.
COLIBRI is highly resistant (Hr) to:Tomv(Tomato Mosaic Virus) ,Va:1/Vd:1 VERTICILLIUM,Fol:1,2 Fusarium Wilt,For Fusarium Crown& Root Rot and intermediate resistance(IR) to: Nematodes(Ma,Mi,Mj).
This makes the variety a top choice for greenhouse production based on farmer experiences and research. The seeds can be easily accessed on www.e-farmersafrica.com seed section at the convenience of your smartphone or a computer.
Like gambling, farming is not straightforward. Winning and losing your jackpot rests at a 50-50 probability. This tells you that, if you are a first timer in serious farming, you should prepare enough capital for 3 or more continuous seasons just in case the first one does not hit the right market, you have a second and third crop and most likely one of the next two will give you crazy returns.
For the part-time farmers, please take note,”never get cheated by what you get from the first harvest to quite your formal job and get into farming fully”.The next season could be your landmine.
If you are informal sector, take your time to study the industry and get enough experience before you quite what you are planning to do. Get into farming when you have a plan B source of income. Know that at times and this depends on the weather, crop you have, acreage and your mode of irrigation, the cost of crop protection chemicals, labour and irrigation could hit your pocket hard enough and sometimes more than your salary.
In a single sentence, what am I saying? Get well prepared before you set your foot into this.
Ensure you acquire the best quality seeds and best varieties e.g. Perseo F1(Outdoor), Colibri F1(greenhouse tomatoes), Tsavorite F1(Cabbage), Red deer F1(Red capsicums) and CLX P05505 F1(Yellow Capsicums) as your number one step in order to achieve your dream.
With that, you are welcome into the kingdom of feeding them…..
